SOMEWHERE IN WASHINGTON

i've had intentions of coming to washington for something like 5 years. there's a lot to say about that, but i'm not saying any of that in this post.

this trip was for spending time with friends and making business moves. both of those happened. but more than either, this was about meeting people i've never met despite having meant to for some time. most of the humans in these photos fall into that category. almost every one went from being individuals i knew casually though various forms of social media...to people i didn't want to leave when i left.

i appreciate every one of the faces in these photos. i'd never have known what i was missing in them had they not been open enough to meet and let things happen as they might.

SOMEWHERE IN ARUBA

my body isn't cut out for cold weather and there's something inherently unfair about being so anything that you hurt. cold, for nathan, is unfair.

2014 is my year to travel and tackle all of the goals i've set for myself. i've spent a lot of time over the last few years working and waiting and, to those ends, planning. a lot of that planning was dependent upon other pieces or parts doing what i wanted them to and, like piece and parts do, some of them did other things instead. so 2014 is where i get my head right, in whatever places i may find myself to do so.

most recently i found myself in aruba, because 2014 and because it is unfair for cold to make my person hurt against it's will. so, when the weather was forecasting windchills close to -40 degrees thursday night, i grabbed my computer, consulted with kayak and bought a ticket for the cheapest caribbean island i could find. for two days later.

here are some pictures.

SOMEWHERE IN NYC

i've been meaning to make this blog happen for a while and now seems as appropriate a time as ever: i've just had a few days to photograph some scenes in my favorite city on the planet, i'm finding myself with a bit of downtime today and it's the first of the year.

it feels odd that i've only been to this city once or twice in the past year or two. i think i'm up somewhere around 30 visits over the last 12 years. i still have to triple-check that i'm hitting the uptown and not the downtown and i'm guilty more often than not of consulting a map on my phone to see which direction the one-way i'm standing in front of runs so that i know if i'm facing east or west, but i have the green and blue lines memorized and i'm somewhat of an expert at jaywalking with the rest of everyone who lives in this place. i'm not sure if i make it back this summer, but fall is calling my name.

here we are. nate's blog is alive.
